The Cardinals have been spoiled through the years with outstanding kickers in Nate Smith, Art Carmody and Chris Philpott. However, this year the Cardinals will break in a new kicker in redshirt freshman John Wallace. The product of Elizabethtown, Ky., has an enormous leg and needs to continue to build confidence. Sophomore Matthew Nakatani has been in the program and will get a chance to contribute this season.
Louisville also replaces both punters from a year ago, so it will have to rely on newcomers to carry the load. Sophomore Ryan Johnson handled the punting chores in the spring and did a good job, but will be pushed by incoming freshman Josh Appleby, one of the best punters coming out Georgia. The return game features some big-play potential in senior Adrian Bushell, and juniors Senorise Perry, Corvin Lamb and Jeremy Wright. Bushell averaged 30.7 yards a return last season, highlighted by a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown versus Connecticut. Perry averaged 26.2 yards a return last season and Wright went for a 23.6 average. He returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown in 2010.
